Joss Declared the End

Bad news: In this weeks Entertainment Weekly in the News and Notes section Joss Whedon announced some news: he has given up on the Firefly saga. Despite the film getting "some of the best reviews of the year", since it seems there is not a large enough audience that a studio/corporation belives in, and also since we did get the big movie, he has given up on Firefly. He is making two more films: Wonder Woman, and a thriller for Universal. He will make which ever one gets greenlighted first first.

Good news: THE BUFFYVERSE ISN'T OVER!!! It the same article he is working on the Buffy comic series. "The eigth season we never made." (If anyone can give me a link to those please comment) and some direct to video movies of charchters are in the works. One he mention is SPIKE!

Well we got a film, and one great season (as first seasons go.) Maybe it will lead him to a huge hit. Who knows!

Joss said that DVD sales were important. This browncoat is buying a crapload today.

sounds like i'm not the only one who went to a preview!

boo to big name hollywood studios!
they keep producing crap with no real depth, and when something comes along that has it, and is quality, they poo-poo it and the makers' efforts.

bastards!

Yeah I'm heading to Wal-Mart in about an hour and getting my copy of "Serenity" possibly two...

Plus remember in interviews and what not Joss always goes back to if there is a story to tell I wanna tell it and I think we all agree that there is a lot more to tell in regards to "Firefly"/"Serenity"

I think Joss is taking a break from the universe now, but will return. He mentioned about there being some more comics and I think that if the sales of the movie on DVD are good (which I think they will be), perhaps we'll get a bit more, maybe a mini-series or a movie on say Sci-Fi or something.

I have actually thought about the movie a lot and I have decided that the movie was never made to make money by Joss, but to reward the fans. I mean the amount of screenings was incredibly high for a movie, so quite a few of the big fans got to see it for free and some multiple times. Sure many went to see it again but if they hadn't seen it previously, they would have seen it two-three times, paying for it. Joss also knows that they will all buy a copy on DVD when it comes out. So the movie wasn't put at the theaters to make bucks, but as a reward for those who wouldn't give up, and hey if crossed over and made some money, well that be ok too, but hew knew that it would sell big on DVD, thus if he wanted to continue or have an option to continue, I'm sure someone will open the door for him.

I also think it might be good to die for he dosn't ruin it as its good now. Not to say he would, but I think short is better than being remembered as crapola.

Hey, don't believe everything you read. The EW take on Joss' view of the Firefly verse contradicts every other interview he's given. A journalist can spin an interview any way they like. Please don't take the EW interview as the law. I don't believe it, not because I don't want to, but because it's only one interview in a pile of interviews which say something completely different.

"In the end, it was what it was: a tough sell," says Whedon, adding that it appears the Firefly saga has reached its conclusion. He has no regrets — and he's moving on.

Seems pretty black and white clear to me. I'm actually glad, it's good for him to move on. Much as we may want more Firefly, Joss does have to consider his career. Dwelling on (and trying to sell something so off-beat) would only prohibit him from creating the next fun and interesting world.

It's too bad we don't have official new stuff coming, but at the same time I'm looking forward to whatever Joss' new concept may be. If anything, as fans, supporting him in his move forward is the best thing we could do.

Whether he's done with the Firefly 'verse or not I should like to point out this quote from the EW website:

"As for Serenity, 'I have closure,' he says. 'And now, I can have it in my home — which means that finally I can actually stop working on it.'"

Does it sound to any of you that he's just talking about finally being finished with the movie instead of the entire 'verse? It would be a Joss-esque thing to say, considering that Serenity had been his greatest undertaking yet.

Buffy was his greatest undertalking. I think he means the whole verse. I don't say Firefly I say Serenity.

Bummer. Firefly is SO much better than Buffy, IMO. I could never really get into the whole Buffy thing, even after having several friends who are big fans, and seeing some of the "best" episodes of the series.

[info]enigmasapple

December 20 2005, 18:50:40 UTC 6 years ago

Buffy is great only if you watch every epsiode in order. You have to carry the emotional intensity to each episode to connect. I like Buffy better, because I like its greater metaphore: adolecence is full of demons, but in the end they all, including the first, and creator who knows us best, dies.

Hmmm, doesn't be also say that he's working on new Serenity comics?

From Comingsoon.net:

"Yeah, I'm going to be doing another year of "X-Men" and some "Buffy" comics and some more "Serenity" comics, so I'll be busy."

That's dated December 19th...yesterday...that hardly sounds like he's given up, just placed it on the backburner (at this point, it's very dependent on DVD sales, so why not...he's a busy guy).

He says as much:

CS: What's going to happen with the "Serenity" franchise now? Are you just going to put it on the backburner?

Whedon: Yeah, you know, that's pretty much it. It was hard to make and I'm very tired. I need some sleep, and then we'll see if people are interested in more, than I have more say.

YAY!! finally he is using what little brain cells he has and realizes he's a one hit wonder pony, nothing more. that show was so slow, boring and without any innovation to it. he just ripped off Soylent Green, WestWorld, Logan's Run, Silent Running, and few other sci-fi movies to make his craptastic show and money wasting movie.

I for one am glad he's giving it up, for good.

I call bullshit.

http://wwwj.comcast.net/movies/news/index.jsp?cat=MOVIES&fn=/articles/josswhedon.html

A direct quote from Joss's mouth: "The, um, the movie is finished. And the story is told. The world is not finished. There’s more to tell, but that’s always the case with everything I do and whether I get the chance to tell [it] or not it is up to somebody else. So I made sure that this movie had completion and didn’t feel like a glorified prequel. It’s its own piece and it wraps everything up. I have a sense of closure that I never had, and I can walk away satisfied. But if somebody tells me not to walk away, I’ll turn right back around."

[info]nittacci

December 20 2005, 21:06:39 UTC 6 years ago

not everything lasts forever

Just because we all love a certain series, it doesn't mean that it can't come to a satisfying end, even if "there is more story to tell".

I can wish for a novel by Nabokov of Lolita grown up, and a couple more seasons of Star Trek TNG, but it's OK if it doesn't happen.

In the world of artistic endeavor, the rule is "leave them wanting more". In this regard, Firefly/Serenity has been a great success. I wouldn't blame JW if he never made another one. I'll still be satisfied with what there is.

An identical post on www.whedonesque.com got deleted earlier today. No worries, people. It upset me for a moment until I realized this was just the EW article that I've seen before.

He's done with the Fireflyverse for now, because he's got Goners and Wonder Woman to worry about right now. In a couple years, after the DVD sales are tabulated, Firefly will get some more thought again.
