Not your typical shindig

I recently had the opportunity to introduce Firefly to some people living at a Zen temple in Okayama, Japan. My main victims were:
Jan, Russian but from Germany, age 24, Zen training in Japan for two years.
Andreas, Dutch, age 20, philosophy student at university before coming to Japan 3 months ago to study Zen.
There were others watching as well, but Jan and Andreas made the most comments...

I started them off with the pilot episode, naturally. Jan is excited because he says he loves science fiction. Andreas has heard of Serenity and knows a bit about Firefly though he has never seen it. They both wanted the English subtitles on since English isn't their first language, and Jan insisted on singing "along" to the theme song even though he had never heard it before. I wish I had recorded it...

On Mal: "He should have been played by a young Clint Eastwood."
On seeing Book: "He's the roshi [abbot in a Zen monastery]."
On seeing Simon: "He's the mad scientist."

When Simon says about River, "There was nothing that didn't come to her as easily as breathing does to us"...Jan: "Haha, except Andreas." Andreas has spent many of his daily consultations with the roshi being made to breathe, since focusing on the breath is what you are supposed to do during sitting meditation.

Shinzan, another guy who had been watching with us, fell asleep soon after we began and didn't wake up until almost the end of the episode. He immediately asked, "What happened to the prostitute?" (eg Inara)

As soon as we had finished, Andreas proposed another episode the following day, since we all had to be down for evening sutra chanting and didn't have time to watch more immediately...

The main point of interest in The Train Job was Niske, especially for Jan, who at first instantly saw that he was supposed to be Russian, but was so unhappy with the rendering of the accent that he finally told us that Niske must be Italian...

At the beginning of Safe, when River is talking about the cows, they decided that she was enlightened.

In Shindig, everyone instantly noticed the Buddha statue at the entrance to the ball. Subsequent discussion of how watching firefly counts as sitting zazen, and they can all describe the episodes to the roshi to prove how hard they're working on their meditation...

Unfortunately, we only had time to watch through Our Mrs. Reynolds before my time at the temple was up. After every episode we finished, and especially after that one, Jan wanted to know when Mal and Inara would finally get together. "Prostitutes make good girlfriends."
